DSS Scarborough Campus: 3rd Annual St. Martins Umzug

November 11, 2017!

It was a wonderful evening without wind and moon for our 3rd annual DSS Scarborough Laternenumzug. A starry night for viewing and praising the lovingly crafted and traditional lanterns made by the children of our schools, their families and friends. These are the perfect ingredients for a St. Martins Umzug.

Approximately 8O, very warmly dressed, participants from Etobicoke, Richmond Hill, Toronto, Scarborough, and Newmarket and as far away as Ajax and Oshawa, were in attendance.

We began by singing a few traditional songs at the shelter and then proceeded, with the help of some awesome technology, to sing and walk, both on and off the path, through a hilly section of the park. I have to say, it was breathtaking, regardless of where you were in the line of lanterns, to see them curve up and down and around the natural features of the park. In complete darkness, with just the soft gentle glow of the bobbing lanterns, evoking and creating childhood memories based on a special fall tradition.

Upon our return to the shelter, everyone was treated to real milk hot chocolate with whipped cream and cookies, for which I would like to thank Frau Klose and her team of student volunteers. The perfect way to end a magical evening.

Thank you to all the families and friends who helped make this such a successful event. If you have any pictures that you would like to share, please forward them to me. I hope to put them up on the website!

We would like to send out a very special thank you to all the families, friends and volunteers of DSS Scarborough who helped make our Laternenumzug/ Lantern Parade 2016 another huge success.  Special mention goes to Chris Fox, Peter and Jakob Klose along with Frau Klose who made homemade hot chocolate on the spot – an emergency backup plan that was simply delicious!

There were a lot of oohs and ahhhs for all of the different styles of lanterns. We marveled at how hard so many children to adults worked on their creations. They were simply magical.  I have included a few pictures and you will see that we had a special evening with great weather. If you have more photos please forward them to me. If you didn’t have a chance to make it this year, we hope to see you next year!

year!
